SMS Lighthouse chief executive Josie Parata says she wanted the organisation to be a place where women in the community could come and be directed to safety.
Ms Parata began SMS Lighthouse in 2008, after leaving her marital situation which amounted to years of physical, verbal and emotional abuse.
She described Lighthouse as a “one-stop shop … to help those who don’t know what to do next, and inform women of what they were entitled to in our community”.
She said entry was free, as she did not want to hinder these distraught women in any way.
